BIG 5.8 GHz Video Receiver shootout / comparison (practical rangetest with my car), 25mw Videorange

If you want good range the RECEIVER is an important factor. Also the used antennas (see last video) and the transmission power (mw) and environmental influences (humidity, trees,...).
I wanted to see how much the receivers influence the way we see the world (when we fly FPV) - and here I compared 3 of them in different priceranges (Quanum, FR632 and ImmersionRC).

To get to the maximum range soon I used extension-cables on the transmitter and receiver side. The cables DO HAVE a significant penalty on radio power! I measured this at home with the ImmersionRC Powermeter. When using a 1m cable on a 25mw transmitter you only get half the mw you would get without the cable.
3m extension cable on the receivers makes it even worse!
This way I got 170m - 250m until the signal was completly gone. Of course while driving the signal would come and go - and this is where the receivers had different behaviour. Some would drop in- and out more frequently - others showed a quite consistant picture.

Quanum Groundstation + FPV Antennas

Hobbyking sent me this nice groundstation for review.
I think it's a good way to get started fast, without having to build something by yourself. If you maybe have an Quanum Autoscan Video RX already this is a great way to upgrade to a diversity system.
If you want to be very mobile (backpack) with your groundstation - than rather go with a small dedicated diversity and goggles - this box is rather heavy and bulky and more suited for the flying field, taken directly out of your trunk ;-)
I like the combination of power distribution and different VOLTs (5 and 12) available - as well as the easy diversity and battery monitoring.
As a sideeffect - you can check your 4cell batteries if you forgot your battery checker. Vor a next upgrade of this groundstation it would be nice to have more balance plugs and maybe some color led bar- that shows the batt capacity nicer.

IF battery stays connected to Balance lead: power consumption of the LiPo meter is 8mA
that is around 500hrs or 3 weeks on a full 4cell 5200mah
so you shouldnt have it connected all the time (and definitly not over the winter season) but it's not a big deal if you forget it over the night...

Since I get asked about FPV antennas often and while I was preparing the FPV receiver comparison video I compared all the different antennas I have (+ the new AOMWays I got sent).
I did collect some very useful information for you guys since a solid videolink is one of the most important things for flying safe and having fun (you can only enjoy FPV flights if you don't always have to fear the loss of your videosignal).
When I have more time and weather is warmer I will do comprehensive comparisions of antenna- and receiver performance - to get the best range.

This is my first really fast Quadcopter. The Trincopter was quite fast also, but this smaller one here has tilted motors - which makes all the difference! It's just so cool to feel this "urge to fly forward fast" from the quad! Nice option here to change a few screws and have the motorarms straight or angled (3 steps: 0°, 10° or 20°). 

The build was fairly easy, you have a good ammount of space in the quad. Battery compartment is large enough to hold an 2250 4cell - maybe even larger. But the best performance is achievable with small and extreme Lipos (1300mah Gensace 75C).

Issue with Yaw on fast miniquads (not only this here):
Reproduceable - on 45° dives from some alt and with some speed, you "feel" that yaw get's unstable and suddenly it snaps 90° (or more?) to the right (most of the times).

I tried so many things (mostly PID tuning and trying different PID controllers in Cleanflight 1.9.0) but nothing helped. After I changed to DIFFERENT PROPS!  the problem went away.
First set of props were normal, plastic Gemfan 5x4 (balanced with sandpaper) and the new ones were also Gemfan 6x4.5 carbon reinforced ones.
I think with the weight of around 800gr the quad was too heavy for the small props.

UPDATE: my friend Prometreus was also testing this quad and found that moving to BLHeli ESC firmware and using Onshot and Active Damping help to get the quad stable.

But as always if you find PID settings on the internet: they dont apply to every quad. You have to have a really similar setup than I do. Every quad is usually different. Many variables influence the outcome. But this can be a good startingpoint for you if you have simlar motors and ESCs...
I used a nice PDB (power distribution board) which has 2 switches for LED or VTX
So I can choose if I want my LEDs to be powered on with this easy switch.
I guess you can also hook up LEDs to be controlled by the NAZE32 board as well - but this is more advanced - the PDB is really easy.

You need a really small FPV cam for it to fit between the front booms!
I use the Fatshark 600TVL which as a really small housing. I even had to file it down on the side a bit for a good fit.You can tilt it a bit by using more double sided tape on the top of the cam holding frame than on the bottom. Works ok for me.

HD Cam:
initially made to mount the Mobius/runcamHD type of flat cams - but gopro or SJ5000+ in my case works also. Vibration dampening works really well - even wih unbalanced motors / Props I have no jello issues!

Easy Antenna tracker - review and fieldtesting (ImmersionRC ezAntennatracker V2)

Immersion sent me their ezAntennatracker V2 some time ago. First I was sceptic if I want to use it, since tracker setup sounded way to complicated for me when I saw it in use by other FPVers.
But since they have "ez" (for easy) in many of their products I thought I'll give it a try. I opted to use only the PAN-Servo - TILT is only needed if you fly really high or if you have a very directional antenna. I use the 13dbi Spironet with 35° horiz and vertical beamwidth - so I dont need to TILT with the tracker.
This makes the mechanics way easier - just a big "plate" directly on the huge sailwinch servo where I placed the antenna. To get this on my tripod I just taped all together (doublesided tape) - the ezTracker with DiversityRX and servo. Of course the diversity here is overkill - if using a tracker you shouldnt need a diversityRX.

If you have a copter or plane with ezOSD onboard - this tracker is really nice and easy to use. It gives you 360° of really good video signal quality! The fact that you have to have telemetry however is a showstopper for me on many FPV vehicles (I have many quads and planes and only few of them have telemetry).

For me: I packed the diversity and the tracker on one groundstation and I can switch between: tracker operation - or just diversity. Recently I made this quite modular with some gopro mounts (i can plug in antenna and monitor additionally if I want to).
In a next video I will try to compare the use of a tracker to my normal use of diversity RX with different antennas - most noteably the new Pepperbox high gain, high beamwidth antenna!

►Startup (5mins!):
- set home (FPV vehicle with enough SAT acquired and with ezOSD telemetry running! standing next to the groundstation
- BEARING Calibration:
I found this to be the easiest way. You just move the copter away in one direction (20 or 30ft) and make sure the antenna is pointing in the right direction - if not - adjust.

►Requirements to get this tracker running:
Quite simple - you just need their ezOSD (or maybe some other compatible telemetry downlink?). the OSD sends GPS position and other telemetry info encoded in the audiochannel of your normal FPV downlink (one audio channel).

How to start FPV - what to get

Since I get asked a lot how to enter the FPV hobby I compiled this list of things to start at. Not the best components - but something you can use for a long time with good value/price rating. Most of the things I use myself (excep the 250 copter here).
FPV entry is really easy today - so many RTF systems, plug & fly versions... You got to consider some things and most of us have to watch their budget as well „smile“-Emoticon
For small budgets - Miniquads from the 250 class are good to start at.
Recently there are so many 250 quads, some high class, expensive ones and also some affordable and promising sets like this here (didnt try this yet!):
AGM Hobby Nighthawk 250 (almost anything you need to fly is contained in this package)
1500mah 3cell with high C-rating!
I would use the hobbyking EU warehouse (or whatever is next to you) to have shorter delivery times and less customs problems.
These here are good bot out of stock tm: Turnigy Nanotech 1500mah 3cell
these would also work: ZIPPY Compact 1500mAh 3S 35C
you need at least 4 pieces (you only get 5 mins flighttime on each). Also get one more for goggles / receiver.
Lipo-Charger  (if you can, go for a dual charger since you will have to charge a lot and you shouldnt leave tham charging unattented)
Cam to record (in HD, not neccessary for flight but cool to have something to share):
RuncamHD  (also get one or two 16GB SD Cards)
Cam for downlink:
(25mw are legal and good for 200-300m)
Video receiverImmersionRC Uno5800
or a good alternative would be a dual / diversity receiver with better signal: ImmersionRC Duo5800
and the cheaper route (didnt test this myself)  Diversity FR632
(if you bought the diversity RX above - also get one directional antenna ImmersionRC Spiro Patch )
This could be the most expensive part here (if you go for the Sony Cinemizers or the Dominator HD for example - 500-700€)
But you can get away cheap and with a great image if you get the styrofoam box type goggles like the:
Quanum V2 and batterycable for it (make sure to get a 3cell battery for goggles and RX also!)

FrSky Taranis - a good remote which is very affordable!
Receivers are good range and cheap here (around 30€). Standard receiver for me is the X8r (with telemetry and around 1-2km range). If you really wanna go far, check the LR receivers.

Hope I didnt forget something really important here - please comment if so. Also comment your suggestions if you have something WAY better for a newbie to be included in this list. But it's not the "top notch" list, it's aimed for entry into the hobby.

Parrot Bebop

I was patiently waiting for this little tech stuffed drone to come out. I bought the AR.Drone 1 back than and loved the new concept. Skipped AR Drone 2 because I didn't see much difference (and had enough other quads) but this one was on my wishlist!
It's a wifi controlled flying cam rather than a drone. It looks like a camcorder with arms and props ;-)
Tech spces:
- weight: 393gr (without bumpers)
- flying time (11mins?  I estimate 8-10mins with std. 1200mah 3cell battery)
- fully stabilized 1080pcam (records fisheye 14mp and computes software stabilized video)
- tilt-able video (with two fingers on phone for example)
- video and control over 2.4 or 5ghz wifi
- can be controlled with only phone or dedicated skycontroller
- range varies (with wifi noise, used controller, channel,...) from only 100m to 2km (with skycontroller) under optimal conditions
- ios and android app (with lots of cool features)
Video quality:
At the time of this filming I didn't have a day with good sunlight (were the cam performs best) - so you see rather poor performance but a decent stabilisation (it was cold and gusty this day, didn't wanna leave my car). This session was fun - maybe I'll post the whole video from my first flights.
As soon as we have some nice weather I will show you that the cam here can work really nice.
- Center CAM-View:   double tap smartphone/tablett (non SkyController mode!) with BOTH fingers!
Now I need to see how you can center the cam in Skycontroller mode!
- Brightness/Contrast settings DO AFFECT the recorded video!

minor Problems I found:
Apps: make sure you always use the most current (my iPad app was 1 week old and had an issue with GPS status which I didn't have on my android).

You should be able to see your drone on a google maps style view but you have to preload this data. Because if I'm connected to drone I have no internet (even if I turn mobile data on my android stays just wifi and has no internet).

HDMI / Video:
I wanted to try my Fatshark Dominator HD, got a HDMI to MICRO HDMI cable and connected it to the skycontroller. Only got a few seconds of image on the goggles - flicker than black.
If I connect HDMI monitor to the skycontroller it works - so it must be on Fatshark side - or it's an incompatibility...
Hope I find I way for this.
But anyhow - the iPad view works really well. It's sharp image - but with some lag and occasionally stuttering video (control data is prioritized over video).

This thing comes from and the complete bundle is 199€. They even sell their own motors (german quality instead of cheap chinese ones). It's a small shop and Nic (the owner) reinvests the income of this hobby project back into the shop.

For the flightcontrol they recommended "Flyduino NanoWii" which is based on MultiWii.

Batteries:  I use the same as on the DRQ250 (SLS 1600 and 1800mah 3cell)  and get a bit more flighttime out of them. 7-9min maybe - gotta test more.

Props: I tried the "Maytech Carbon" 5x3 they also sell and they are awesome. I'm normally not into balancing props (too lazy) but here it really made a difference! (Prop on a screwdriver, sand off some material from the prop half that moves down). Was maybe 15mins of work.

As you see in the vid the roll and loop rate is insane. Power is plenty - hover at 1/3. I'm not used to have so much "way" on my throttle stick left until full throttle ;-)

The downsides? Well maybe just the size - it's not easy to find space to fit additional stuff on it. The mobius is a tight fit between the front props - but no props in view! My video transmitter mounting is not optimal now. If I fly back to me the battery and copter block the antenna - signal gets a bit bad.

ImmersionRC Duo5800 vs Black Pearl Video Diversity receiver comparison

In this comparison video I wanted to find out if the Black Pearl (all in one - Display with diversityRX) is compareable to the dedicated ImmersionRC Duo5800 receiver. On paper they both have 90dbi sensitivity. See in the second part how they look in comparison. For my test setup I seperated video TX and RX with a few thick walls at home.
Also I measured all my antennas with the ImmersionRC RF Powermeter. You see the values at 2:24.
The normal ones were affected by alignment (horz vs vert) and the SPW ones were "immune" to different alignment - as expected. The directional antennas had great antenna-gain in the cone and somewhat less optimal outside of it.
Btw. you can also measure the mW of your video TX. You plug a 30dB attenuator in between and set it in the powermeter. Great to measure the advertised milliwats vs the real output!

DIY FPV Goggles - cheap alternative with superb quality picture!

Here I had my first look through it - and it was an amazing picture!

+ big
+ sharp
+/- comfy to wear - only the weight can be a problem if you pack too much on the goggles...
- some soldering needed? some cutting and fiddeling around

Maybe I can fit an adapter to use the NexWave 5.8Ghz module directly on these goggles?

You can order deluxe version (with strap and extra lens). While I didn't use the lense here the strap itself is good enough. Just added a broader band at the back (see build images).

and a 5" TFT display from Dealextreme
(available in EU warehouse ~ 40$)
If you find them somewhere else - dont buy at DX - they're slow! EU warehouse is a joke. They deliver from China through Netherlands. So no customs but 3-4weeks delivery!

and finally better fresnel lens (optional) (tried both - this upgrade really gives you better quality!)

►►Update: just before publishing this vid I did a 2nd testflight with the MiniQuad. The picture is really big, great to fly BUT: the blackscreen issue can be tricky/scary. So not sure yet if I'd trust this goggles for an expensive, bigger, unstabilized platform. So if you have some other safety features (second monitor for emergencies) it's ok.
Hover recommended routing it throug a DVR - this might eliminate the black/bluescreen. Or optimal: search for a similar size display without bluescreen.

Fatshark Dominator HD

First tests were a bit dissapointing. I compared them against RCV922 and AttitudeSD.
RCV922 has 46° fov and funny: it's sharp without diopter for me (I'm short sighted). AttiSD require diopters for me. Initially I didn't use diopter glasses and thought the DomHD are no way as sharp as the 5 year old rcv922 ;-)
After putting on the diopter lenses now (the ones from AttiSD fit) - the picture is really good! Most notably you get blown away by the color quality. Also you get less barrel distortion. These optics sure were hard to design!

FOV - screensize

For me it was always the most important factor to really get immersed with FPV - big screen! The RCV922 were great regarding this - but you couldnt read OSD info in the edges...
AttiSD were better for OSD - but not so good immersive feeling. DomHD now delivers both - quite sharp on the edges and huge screen. On the last FPV meet I tried many different models (AIO, Skyzone, Cinemizer). Most of them have around 30° fov - way to little for my taste!

Wearing comfort:

I always preferred the foam from rcv922 over the rubber eyecaps. So old ones are nicer to wear for me. With AttiSD and now DomHD I get ugly eyerings with fpv sessions ;-)

IPD adjustment:

Is fine for me - almost sharp in all corners - much better than with RCV922 for sure.

Image comparison:

This is hard - and I here only had limited time. Used just a galaxy S4 cam pressed against eyecaps (approx same distance on all 3 goggles).


Super option! I tend to fly just with 5.8 nexawave RX without groundstation. Just makes no sense flying miniquads with huge groundstation. Keep it portable here!So DVR is a good safety option if you crash. One wish: please make the DVR autorecord after powerup. May be energy waste and SD card wast - but also use cycle recording!
And: if you crash and panic and tear away your goggles you may be dumb enough to just unplug power and not stop DVR rec first. In that case the DVR recording is lost. So we have to get used to always stop REC after crashing ;-) Other than that: rec quality is really good, 720x480 30fps with 8mbit


The first batch is said to be delivered with a free (instead of optional) Trinity HT Module already installed. I didn't test it yet but the new module should be really accurate and makes me wanna revive an big plane and install Pan/Tilt on it (which I hopefully will find the time for).


First I was a bit dissapointed - but now I don't wanna use the other goggles ;-)
Diopters were needed - that was one dissapointment - and I couldnt believe the high price (650€ in germany!) - but now I learned here from Fatshark that the LCDs are making it so expensive.

DJI Phantom 2

Switch to NazaM mode instead of Phantom mode to enable some additional features!

Flyaway problems:
My conclusion - the std. radio and the internal receiver are crap. They can be tricked by interfering signals (wifi,...) quite easily! I don't know any other 2.4 radio that is so sensitive...

GPS Antenna is fragile!  /  GPS reception issues!?!
If a newbie crashes his phantom (maybe because of a flyaway) the top mounted ceramic GPS antenna might get cracks and the reception of GPS satellites can be weak or even worse can be sporadic (sats dissapear while flying - flightcontroll is confused - tries to countersteer the sudden loss of position and goes crazy?)
I have a P2 here that had a crash and now the sat fix sometimes takes forever, sometimes it's here in a few seconds. I learned that if I fly in Atti Mode first, then after landing I could get GPS fix really fast.
Ultimately: I had serious problems getting GPS fix - even with new antenna! Only after removing the (somehow torn apart) protection foil copper thing it worked for me. Maybe the foil was giving a short circuit to the GPS antenna circuitboard? No Problems since than...
